Inside Atelier Viccarbe

Viccarbe was founded by industrial designer Victor Carrasco in his hometown of Valencia, where the warmth of the Mediterranean and the city's relaxed way of life influence the colours, details and materials of each collection. Here, the traditions of the atelier focus on design, research and development with designers from Jaime Hayon to John Pawson and Patricia Urquiola.

'I still remember when I met Jaime… [I thought] who is this guy wearing blue shoes? An artist? A designer? Maybe an actor?… Jaime is a catalyst, like a “Mary Poppins” capable of dismantling you with pure talent and energy…’

When Carrasco met designer Jaime Hayon on a plane years ago, he knew that one day they would design something together. 'I still remember when I met Jaime… [I thought] who is this guy wearing blue shoes? An artist? A designer? Maybe an actor?…’ recalls Carrasco. ‘…Jaime is a catalyst, like a “Mary Poppins” capable of dismantling you with pure talent and energy. When I landed, I knew that Jaime and Viccarbe would one day create a project…’

A collection defined by great simplicity, comfort and an easy approachability, the Viccarbe philosophy is Mediterranean in every detail. 'We were born in the Mediterranean,’ Carrasco adds. 'The place where design lives free of all pretence. An area where our characteristic irony blends with a calm and relaxed personality, with no room for unnecessary excess.’

The details, colours and materials of each collection are influenced by the climate and landscape of Valencia. As a city which enjoys more than 300 days of sun each year, warmth and light are an integral part of their ethos. The collection is defined by simplicity, comfort and easy approachability, and behind the scenes Viccarbe embraces the traditions of the atelier.

Design, research and development come together under one roof in collaboration with designers who spend time in the workshop developing ideas and perfecting details. From the Trestle Table by John Pawson, to the Season Chair by Piero Lissoni that won the Red Dot Design Award in 2016, the Burin table by Patricia Urquiola and the Aleta Chair by Jaime Hayon, each piece of furniture as diverse and energetic as the designers themselves.

The minimalist and versatile Trestle table by John Pawson is a visually light centre point for collaborative spaces and Pawson has also adapted his design for the outdoors too. The Aleta Chair by Jamie Hayon is a favourite for Viccarbe, highly customisable and available and merging comfort and full of character. Piero Lissoni’s Season Chair is softly sculpted to create a comfortable dining chair for offices, homes and restaurants. Evoking its namesake, the design can be customised to suit each space with a variety of fabrics, colours and configurations, and the outdoor version is a robust extension with hidden casters that allow the chair to glide. While Patricia Urquiola’s Burin Table joins the Burin side table, both elegant and robust with indoor and outdoor versions.
