Moooi Carpets: Where art meets design

Moooi’s signature carpets are created by renowned names in the world of interiors, fashion, visual arts, design, textiles, illustration and photography. From digital artist Andrés Reisinger to designers Marcel Wanders and Front, each carpet represents the artist’s imagination and pushes the traditions of rug making to shape daring and exquisite art pieces designed to be collected.

Andrés Reisinger and ‘The Pollination of Hortensia’ and ‘Ripples in Pink’

One of the world's most sought-after digital artists, Andrés Reisinger’s work defines the fertile space between the digital and physical spheres. Originally from Argentina and now living in Barcelona, Reisinger describes his work as ‘unclassifiable,’ its forms bridging a recognisable aesthetic with a mesmerisingly clear vision. One of his most well known pieces is Hortensia which made its debut as a NFT before Moooi brought it into the real world, now a rare design creation and incredibly popular contemporary object. Reisinger’s artwork ‘Pollen’ would also inspire his collection for Moooi.

An artist who surrounds himself with natural elements, the ‘Pollination of Hortensia’ illustrates the power of transformation and growth, each carpet capturing the essence of a season. From the vibrant blooms of spring to the fiery hues of autumn, the collection’s bold colours and intricate designs remind us that life is always changing in beautiful ways. Reisinger’s latest work for Moooi is ‘Ripples in Pink’ which captures the fluid motion of a single water drop as it hits a pond. Seemingly frozen in time. As soon as the drop hits the surface, a dance of scattering rings follows, it’s the epitome of a calm, fluid yet focused world where time moves slowly.

‘Mixing Pixels’ by Ruben de Haas

‘Mixing Pixels' is a collection of carpets by Dutch artist Ruben de Haas. His playful curiosity for exploring colour and new techniques takes shape in a remix of existing designs in the Moooi collection. De Haas chose pieces by artists and designers Studio Job, Front, Kit Miles, Emma Larsson, Jae Yong Kim, Sjoerd Vroonland and Claire Vos, creating 12 lively new carpets that focus on bold colour and abstract shapes that overlap with the Amsterdam-based artist’s playful and intuitive work. His trademark is mono-coloured artworks are found in collection in New York, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Australia & The Netherlands. In 2022 he was nominated for the Royal Dutch Art Prize, Koninklijke Prijs voor de Vrije Schilderkunst’, an achievement the artist says brings him closer to his big goal to show at MoMa in New York in 2030.

‘Calligraphy Bird' from the Extinct Animal’s collection by Moooi

With deep scarlet and bright sapphire hues balanced by softer shades, ‘Calligraphy Bird' is part of Moooi’s Extinct Animals collection that celebrates the beauty, and loss, of nature in all its splendour. Joining the Dwarf Rhino, Dodo Pavone bird and Coral Flying Fish, Calligraphy Bird captures the rhythmic dance of the male bird and its richly coloured and ornate collar feathers shining in the sun, while the female bird responds by fanning her tail feathers in graceful calligraphy swirls. Designed by the team at Moooi Carpets, this circular rug safeguards the poetic beauty of the birds’ courtship, making it eternal. The Extinct Animal Collection of 12 beautiful carpets brings some of the world’s extinct animals back into our lives, ‘untamed and beautiful’.

‘Good artists copy, great artists design…’

Andrés Reisinger, digital artist

In the Meadow Carpet by Emma Larsson

Nature is an endless source of inspiration for writers, artists, designers and musicians, and like Clair Vos, Stockholm-based artist and illustrator Emma Larsson is inspired by nature’s shapes, colours and patterns. The Stockholm-based artist's ‘In the Meadow’ collection for Moooi, depicts what she sees, the whimsical and abstract shapes depicting the ethereal worlds of 18th century aquarelle art. ‘By intuition, I explore and evolve thanks to the colours and cunning shapes that dwell in nature…,’ Larsson remarks. Like ink dropped in water, the intensity of the colours she chooses creates density in each illustration and an ethereal feel. Striking the balance between colourful dreamscape and melancholy, Larsson reveals a world of abstract shapes for brands from Moooi to Rachel Comey, Show Studio, and Winsor & Newton, while her @zebrakadebra platform captures new works and followers around the world.

‘Walking on Clouds’ by Front

Clouds have been a source of inspiration for artists for centuries. For their latest design for Moooi titled ‘Walking on Clouds,’ Swedish design duo Front studied the clouds in all kinds of paintings, finding hundreds of different tones and shapes and developing a collage in mixed-media drawn from across the eras. Front’s Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren whose work can be found at MoMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Vitra Design Museum and Centre Pompidou, always communicate a story to the observer about the design process, about the material, about conventions within the design field, or about their fascination with magic.

Marcel Wanders and ‘Eden Queen’

Inspired by the Dutch Masters of the Golden Age including Vermeer and Rembrandt, and the rich colour and vivid compositions that featured landscapes, animals and flowers, ‘Eden Queen’ by Marcel Wanders is a floral composition that brings an enchanting 17th-century charm. A cofounder of Moooi and one of the world’s most prominent product and interior designers, Marcel Wanders has made his mission to create what he describes as 'an environment of love where our most exciting dreams come true'. His chief concern is to bring the human touch back into design, where designer, crafts person and user are reunited. In this universe, remarks Wanders, ‘The coldness of industrialism is replaced by poetry, fantasy and romance of different ages, vividly brought to life in the contemporary moment.’

Jae Yong Kim and ‘Donut Fear’

‘Shine bright and live fearlessly!’ is artist Jae Yong Kim’s aim. Inspired by his collection of ceramic donuts that redefined the meaning of happiness in his life, they now play out in the polychromatic ‘Heart Donut' and the ‘Got Donut?’ with its missing bite. Recognised for his quirky, eclectic, and humorous works, Yong Kim has created a relatable language that deals with everyday experiences, like anguish, joy, love and friendship. His studio produces small ceramic pieces and large installations, experimenting with different media and pushing them to their fullest capacity and limits. The simplicity of the hyper real ‘Donut Fear’ collection gives us a moment to indulge in childlike happiness, a message the artist hopes will help his audience understand the value of art and the importance of culture, while also sharing the beautiful feeling of joy.

‘Lines Lines Lines’ by Alf Bärbel Wit

The newly released collection of enchanting ‘Lines Lines Lines’ carpets were designed by eight year old fledgling artist Alf Bärbel Wit, son of Dutch designer Antoine Peters. Alf’s abstract, colourful patterns, remarks Moooi, ‘… echo the freedom of Basquiat, Appel, Kline, Miró, Haring and Kandinsky, bearing a unique style,’ creating a meditative vibe through their distinct and intricate detail. The flash of bold colours and lines in the two rugs within the collection, ’Everything Now’ and ‘Blinding Lights’, echo the artistic freedom of the 1960s and 70s. ‘I sometimes wish the world was made out of lines only.' Alf remarks. 'Hopefully my work will inspire people to dream, to draw themselves, and make happy mistakes.’

A collection inspired by the beauty of nature by Claire Vos

Claire Vos’s world is inspired by minerals, birds, flowers, the full spectrum of beauty found in nature. The designer's collection of four rugs for the Moooi Carpets includes ‘Liquid Layers’ that morphs and liquefies natural materials into new patterns, ’Agate’ transforms a powerful luck stone and bygone crystals, ‘Pebble’ is a smooth-out pebble in timeless greys and earth-tones, ’Tulip’ is an array of colours found in the typical Dutch landscapes in spring, and ‘Marl’ reflects the different natural colours in layers of stone. Specialising in re-interpreting traditional techniques, colours and forms, paying close attention to the quality of the materials she uses, the end result is always graphic and contemporary.
