more space talks with William Smart of Smart Design Studio about his favourite artwork by Mike Parr, tune by Arlo Parks and go-to recipe, designing a dining table for his new house and what he loves about the 1972 Mario Marenco sofa by Arflex, and his fascination with the beauty of classic cars that is proving a relaxing distraction during lockdown.
What are some of the most coveted design pieces in your home?
I’ve just designed and made my dining table and I’m happy. It’s very low, which we love, sculptural, beautifully crafted, light and heavy at the same time.
And do you also have a favourite piece of art?
We have a series of Mike Parr paintings called ‘Marble Cliffs’ and I never tire of them.
If you have a piece of design from the Space collection, what do you love about it?
The Arflex Marenco sofa and ottoman from the Poliform collection. I love the look, the feel and the height, very low again..We also have a B&B Italia Diesis sofa and I love that it’s a classic piece that won’t date.
A favourite recipe?
Tomato Crumble. It is easy, fast, tasty and makes our whole house smell amazing.
Besides architecture and interiors, I just love cars. I don’t need to own them, I just admire them. It started when I was in primary school and has never ended. I hope that in the future I can spend some more time looking at beautiful cars.
